Unitarian Universalist Refugee and Immigrant Services and Education (UURISE) is a nonprofit organization that provides free and low-cost legal immigration services. Their main office is in southern California, near San Diego. They partner with Unitarian Universalists San Luis Obispo (UUSLO) to provide their services to this area through Zoom or by phone. Services are provided by immigration attorneys and accredited legal representatives in partnership with UURISE.

Members of Allies for Immigration Justice actively participate in this program, doing outreach to the community, completing intakes, and making referrals. 

 

Services include:

  • General immigration legal consultations

  • DACA renewals

  • Naturalization

  • Green card renewals

  • FOIA

  • Emergency Safety Planning for Immigrants

  • Referrals to local partner agencies

No-Cost Virtual Immigration Legal Services

How It Works

Steps:

 

Step One: 

No appointment is needed. Come to the UUSLO at 2201 Lawton Ave. in San Luis Obispo on  a 1st or 3rd Sunday from 12:30-2:30.   

OR

If you are unable to come on a Sunday, it is possible to arrange a phone appointment to complete the application. Call 805-439-0188 Ext. 4 and leave a message.

  • You will not be getting any legal advice during this first meeting.

  • A volunteer will help you fill out a form to determine your needs.

  • For in-person meetings, see the flier below for the address and map of location.

  • For in-person meetings, bring any documents or paperwork regarding your case. If needed, scanning and copying can be done at the UUSLO office. 

 

Step Two:

Depending on your needs, the volunteer will refer you to:  

  • a local partner agency

OR 

  • to the UURISE legal team

Step Three:

If you are referred to UURISE, a team member from the San Diego office will call or text you within  2-3 business days to make an appointment with an attorney or an accredited  legal representative for a virtual (Zoom or phone call) legal consultation.

 

Step Four: 

Attend your UURISE appointment by Zoom or by phone.​

  • Consultations may last up to one hour.

  • Attend the meeting from your home or another location where you have access to a computer or cell phone with internet access.

  • If you do not have internet access, you can come to UUSLO for your Zoom appointment. Please CALL FIRST and leave a message at ​805-439-0188 Ext. 4 to arrange for a volunteer to be there to meet you.

 

After the first meeting, a volunteer will be available to answer any questions you may     have about the process.
